Providing Resources and Support for Bereaved Parents
Our Angels: Mary Mae's Foundation (OA: MMF) is committed to creating a safe haven for bereaved parents, where they can access essential resources, education, religious preparations, and more. We understand the profound pain that comes with the loss of a loved one, and we are here to offer support during these challenging times.
Our Angel’s: Mary Mae’s Foundation (OA: MMF) is committed to bringing awareness of stillbirth, miscarriage, and infant child loss to the community and to help increase resources for bereaved families during this difficult time. The mission of OA: MMF is to embrace and work alongside bereaved families as they embark on this unfamiliar road ahead of them. We commit to helping these families acknowledge the beloved child they have lost and to working with them to create the memories they wish for this or these children. Helping other bereaved parents and families cope with the loss of a child is our number one priority.
We also aspire to provide resources and support for families during this difficult time. Many hospitals do not have patient and family support mechanisms established in the event of stillbirths, miscarriages, or child or infant loss. Due to this, our objective is to provide the education material, support structures, resources, and necessary information needed as bereaved parents and families navigate this difficult time. For example, we will help bereaved families identify and ask pertinent questions, provide a list of cemeteries, offer support group options, and make appropriate religious preparations. We also aspire to change the formality of the paperwork received in the hospital during these difficult days. Sadly, when you lose a child to stillbirth, you do not receive a birth certificate, and you also cannot receive a death certificate. We intend to work to help bereaved parents receive the documentation that validates and acknowledges the child or children that they have lost so suddenly and tragically. Eventually, we hope to provide memory-making opportunities for families, facilitating such things as weighted bears, photo progressions, and much more.
Defining Bereavement
At OA: MMF, we recognize the deep sorrow that encompasses bereaved parents. According to the Merrian-Webster definition, bereavement is the suffering caused by the death of a loved one. We aim to be a guiding light for those experiencing this heart-wrenching journey.
Our Inspiration for Resilience and Hope
Mary's story began on December 14, 2013, at 6:51 p.m. She received her wings on this day and will forever watch over Brian and me until we meet again. She weighed 6 lbs, 4 oz, and was 21 inches long, and she melted our hearts with her beauty. December 13, when we had our 38-week appointment (actually, I was 38 weeks and two days). Brian and I were expecting the same exciting update at this appointment that we have had many times up to this point. But instead, we received the worst news possible: she is no longer with us. Those words are words no one wants to hear. Your baby has passed away, and we need to get you to the hospital right away. We proceed to our home to gather needed items and inform our family of this tragic update. During this time, we had no idea what the next steps were. Our family's support carried us through this, and the staff at Swedish Hospital helped educate us about the new life we will have.

We believe in taking action to make a positive impact in our community and in the lives of those who have suffered the loss of a child.
Proceeds from the 5K event will be directed towards assisting families currently going through the devastating experience of child loss. These funds can be utilized for various purposes, including funeral expenses, headstone costs, memory-making items, counseling services, and more. OA: MMF is committed to providing a helping hand during this trying time.
